Introducing my newest painting:
"Sarasota Sunset. July 4th, 2008."

9.18.2008

Recently, this painting survived Hurricane Ike here in Houston.  Though I survived as well, I decided to evacuate before Ike hit us.  That is partly why it took me so long to finish.  That and painting clouds always gives me fits. So, of course, I tried to paint them again in an attempt not to be conquered by them.  Hopefully I succeeded, but I will let you be the judge of that.

The idea for this painting came to me when I was watching the sun go down in Sarasota, Florida on the 4th of July.  I was entranced by the orangey pink of the buildings in the sunset light and in awe of the beautiful colors in this thunderhead behind the palm trees.  When the sun finally disappeared,  the fireworks ended up being beautiful too even though the wind blew the ash from them into my eyes.  That's what we get for having good seats I suppose.

"A  painting lives by companionship, expanding and quickening in the eyes
of the sensitive observer.  It dies by the same token.  It is therefore a
risky & unfeeling act to send it out into the world."
